1. রামলালের বয়স কম ছিল, কিন্তু দুষ্টবুদ্ধি কম ছিল না। গ্রামের লােকে তাহাকে ভয় করিত। অত্যাচার যে তাহার কখন, কিভাবে, কোন দিক দিয়া দেখা দিবে সে কথা কাহারও অনুমান করিবার জো ছিল না। তাহার বৈমাত্রেয় বড়ভাই শ্যামলালকেও ঠিক শান্ত প্রকৃতির লােক বলা চলে না। কিন্তু সে লঘু অপরাধে গুরুদণ্ড করিত না। গ্রামের জমিদারী কাছারীতে সে কাজ করিত এবং নিজের জমিজমা তদারক করিত।শ্যামলালের পত্নী নারায়ণী যেবার প্রথম ঘর করিতে আসেন—সে আজ তের বছরের কথা— সে বছর রামের বিধবা জননীর মৃত্যু হয়। মৃত্যুকালে তিনি আড়াই বছরের শিশু রাম এবং এই মস্ত সংসারটা তাহার তের বছরের বালিকা পুত্রবধূ নারায়ণীর হাতে তুলিয়া দিয়া যান।

Ramlal was young in age but no novice in mischievousness. The people of the village were afraid of him. Nobody could guess when, how and from which direction his outrages would come. His elder step-brother, Shyamlal, was not also exactly a man of mild nature. But he did not inflict heavy punishment for a light offence. He worked at the office of the village zamindar and looked after his own estate. Ram’s widowed mother died in that very year when Shyamlal’s wife Narayani had come to this house as a newly- wed bride about thirteen years ago. At the time of her death, she handed over the charge of the two-and-a-half-year-old child Ram and of this big household to her thirteen-year-old young daughter-in-law Narayani.

2. একদিন একটি লােক তাহার বন্ধুর নিকটে বলিল, “ভাই অন্যমনস্কতার জন্য আমি নানারূপে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হইয়াছি। সেদিন একখানি হাজার টাকার নােট সামান্য কাগজ মনে করিয়া পােড়াইতে গিয়াছিলাম। ভাগ্যে আমার স্ত্রী দেখিতে পাইয়াছিলেন ; নতুবা হাজার টাকা লােকসান হইত।” তাহার বন্ধু উত্তর করিলেন, “অন্যমনস্কতার কথা কহিও না। সেদিন রাত্রিতে একটি লাঠি লইয়া বেড়াইতে গিয়াছিলাম। ঘরে ফিরিয়া আহারাদি না করিয়া একেবারে শয়নগৃহে উপস্থিত হইলাম। তখন আমি এমন অন্যমনস্ক যে লাঠিগাছটি ঘরের কোনে না রাখিয়া নিজে শয়ন না করিয়া লাঠিটি শয্যায় শােওয়াইয়া আমি নিজে ঘরের কোনে সমস্ত রাত্রি দণ্ডায়মান রহিলাম।” বিদ্যাসাগর মহাশয়ের এই গল্পে নিমন্ত্রিত ভদ্রলােকগণ হাে হাে করিয়া হাসিয়া উঠিলেন।

One day, a person said to his friend, “Brother, I have suffered great losses due to absentmindedness. The other day I was about to burn a thousand-rupee note, taking it to be a useless piece of paper. Fortunately, my wife noticed this ; otherwise, I would have suffered a loss of one thousand rupees.” His friend replied, “Don’t speak about absentmindedness. The other night I went out for a walk with a stick in hand. On returning home, I went straight to the bed-room without having my dinner. At that time I was so absentminded that, instead of keeping the stick at a corner of the room and I myself lying on the bed, I put the stick on the bed and I myself remained standing the whole night at a corner of the room.” All the invited guests burst into laughter at this story of Vidyasagar.

3. যখন নবকুমারের নিদ্রাভঙ্গ হইল তখন রজনী গভীর। এখনও যে তাহাকে ব্যাঘ্রে হত্যা করে নাই ইহা তাহার আশ্চর্য বােধ হইল। তিনি ইতস্ততঃ নিরীক্ষণ করিয়া দেখিতে লাগিলেন ব্যাঘ্র আসিতেছে কিনা। অকস্মাৎ বহুদূরে একটি আলােক দেখিতে পাইলেন। পাছে ভ্রম জন্মিয়া থাকে এজন্য নবকুমার মনােনিবেশপূর্বক তৎপ্রতি দৃষ্টি করিতে লাগিলেন। আলােক পরিধিক্রমে বর্ধিতায়তন ও উজ্জ্বলতর হইতে লাগিল – আগ্নেয় আলােক বলিয়া প্রতীতি জন্মিল। প্রতীতিমাত্র নবকুমারের জীবনাশা পুনরুদ্দীপ্ত হইল। মনুষ্য সমাগম ব্যতীত এ আলােকের উৎপত্তি সম্ভবে না। কেননা, এ দাবানলের সময় নহে। নবকুমার গাত্রোত্থান করিলেন এবং যথায় আলােক সেই দিকে ধাবিত হইলেন।

When Nabakumar woke up, it was deep at night. He was surprised that he was not killed by a tiger till then. He looked around to see if a tiger was coming. Suddenly he noticed a speck of light at a long distance. Lest it should be an illusion, Nabakumar began to watch the light with great attention. Gradually the light became bigger and brighter and it seemed to him to be an igneous light. As soon as this belief grew in him, Nabakumar’s hope of life was revived. Such a light could not originate without the presence of human beings because it was not the time of forest-fire.  Nabakumar stood up and began to proceed towards that light.

4. এমনি বিপদের সময় হঠাৎ কোথা হইতে ইন্দ্র আসিয়া উপস্থিত। সে বােধ করি সুমুখের রাস্তা দিয়া চলিয়াছিল, হাঙ্গামা শুনিয়া বাড়ী ঢুকিয়াছে। নিমিষে শতকণ্ঠ চিৎকার করিয়া উঠিল, “ওরে বাঘ! বাঘ! পালিয়ে আয়রে ছােড়া, পালিয়ে আয়।” প্রথমটা সে থতমত খাইয়া ছুটিয়া আসিয়া ভিতরে ঢুকিল। কিন্তু ক্ষণকাল পরেই ব্যাপারটা শুনিয়া লইয়া একা নির্ভয়ে উঠানে নামিয়া গিয়া লন্ঠন তুলিয়া বাঘ দেখিতে লাগিল। দোতালার জানালা হইতে মেয়েরা রুদ্ধনিঃশ্বাসে এই ডাকাত ছেলেটির পানে চাহিয়া দুর্গানাম জপিতে লাগিল। পিসিমা তাে ভয়ে কঁদিয়াই ফেলিলেন। নীচে ভীড়ের মধ্যে গাদাগাদি দাঁড়াইয়া হিন্দুস্থানী সিপাহীরা তাহাকে সাহস দিতে লাগিল এবং এক একটা অস্ত্র পাইলেই নামিয়া আসে, এমন আভাসও দিল।

Suddenly Indra appeared from somewhere at this juncture. Probably he was passing along the road in front and entered the house on hearing
the hue and cry. Instantly hundreds of voices shouted, “Tiger ! tiger ! Run inside, run, you impudent chap”. At first he was puzzled and rushed inside. But, after a while, he understood what had happened, came down alone to the courtyard fearlessly, lifted up the lantern and began to look for the
tiger. The womenfolk watched this daring boy with bated breath through the first-floor window and began to repeat the name of Goddess Durga.
The paternal aunt simply burst into tears. Downstairs, the up-country sepoys, huddled together in the crowd, began to encourage him and even hinted that they were ready to come down if they could get weapons.
