Gofur said, “Don’t delay, my daughter; let us proceed. We shall have to walk a long distance”. Amina was about to take a drinking-water pot and her father’s rice plate with her; Gofur stopped her and said, “Leave these things here, my daughter. These would be used to expiate the death of Mahesh”.

Holding the hand of his daughter, he stepped out of his hut in the darkness of midnight. He had no relatives in the village and three was none to be informed. After crossing the courtyard, he abruptly halted under the familiar acacia tree by the side of the road and suddenly burst into tears. Lifting up his face towards the dark, starry sky, he said, “Oh God, punish me as much as you wish; but my Mahesh has died from unquenched thirst. Nobody has left even a small plot of land for him to graze. Please never forgive the crime of him who has deprived Mahesh of eating the grass and drinking the water gifted by you.”

After escorting him to the pathsala, Harihar said, “Apu, when the school breaks up, I shall come again to take you back home. Be attentive to your studies ; listen to your teacher, don’t be naughty”. After a while Apu looked back and saw his father gradually disappearing at the bend of the road. He found himself at sea and remained sitting for a long time with his head hung down. After sometime, he lifted up his head nervously and saw that the teacher, sitting on the shop- platform, was weighing rock-salt on the scale to sell it to a customer. Some senior boys, sitting on their respective palm-leaf mats, were reading something in a harsh voice and swinging violently. A younger boy, leaning against a pole, was unmindfully chewing a palm-leaf from the bundle of palm-leaves used for writing on. Another senior boy, with a mole on his cheek, was watching something under the shop-platform.

I have been crying myself hoarse for a long time to emphasize that the Bengalis would not survive if they cannot solve their food problem. I feel like crying at the pathetic sight of the physical and mental weakness of the Bengali youth. The youth of Bengal are prematurely ageing by sacrificing their health and youth in the pursuit of higher education. They have been wasting half of their life in search of ill-paid jobs. They feel greatly relieved if they can somehow manage a job and settle down in life. Very few Bengalis think of engaging themselves in trade and commerce. This servile mentality is the root cause of backwardness of the Bengalis.
